Species first, always
Some species tolerate company in the right setup. Many — including most monitors and most snakes — do not, at any size of enclosure.
Size and sex
Where cohabiting is viable, mismatched sizes and the wrong sex combination are the two things that go wrong most often.
Husbandry match
Two animals with different temperature, humidity or lighting needs cannot share an enclosure, however well they get on.
Health verification

Running a safe first meeting
Species-specific practice. None of this replaces your vet — if either animal has an ongoing health issue, ask them first.
- Research your specific species before considering cohabiting at all — the default answer for most is no.
- Quarantine any new reptile for an extended period; a reptile vet will tell you how long.
- Never house animals with different heat, humidity or UV requirements together.
- Feed separately, always, without exception.
- Watch for one animal claiming the basking spot — that is the start of a serious problem, not a quirk.

Is it safe for two reptiles to meet briefly?
Only with quarantine completed and with species that tolerate it. A brief meeting still transmits disease, so treat the health checks as the important part.
